They don't completely rely on their powers, though, as there's still plenty of good old fashioned martial arts and sword swinging, which you can't have a samurai era period piece without. Try going up against one who can control the hair on his body, or melt into a gooey substance when he touches salt and then gets down your throat. Ninjas were said to be hard enough to kill with their special tricks and techniques. Naruto may have its fair share of fight scenes, complete with unique abilities, but they're nothing compared to what you'll see in Basilisk.
But it's these types of powers that helps amp up the action when the battles kick in. The girls all look normal in the usual cute and/or hot anime way, which given this show, makes them all the more dangerous. Definitely freaky, wouldn't you say? Luckily for most male viewers, these types of characters are all guys. For one thing, there's an old guy with a huge head who can stretch his limbs to great lengths, as well as a guy who looks and crawls around like a spider (his limbs are shaped as such and he has a growth on his back that resembles a spider's back-end) and even spits a web-like fluid from his mouth. And those are the normal-looking guys! Other characters are downright freaky in their appearance, with powers to match.
Yes, that last one seems rather silly, but darn useful as a distraction. But there are others with powers that seem to come right out of Dragonball Z, like the guy who can miniature black holes with his breath or the girl who can create little pink butterflies out of mid air. Some are "literal" versions of actual ninja skills, such as disguise or blending into the background one guy can actually take on the appearance of another by pressing his face into a mold of the person he's copying, while another can literally melt into the surrounding environment.

Keep in mind, though, that this series is another one you have to watch from the beginning, as each episode continues into one another and things will make plenty more sense when you watch this volume and know what's going on. So that'll make history buffs such as myself happy. Even more fun with this series is that it's a period piece, set during the Tokugawa Era of Japan and complete with historical references, from Tokugawa shogun Ieyasu to the warlord Oda Nobunaga. This time they're giving us ninjas, which are proving to be very popular as of late.
